Would like more info about Popudiny where my husband's great grandfather, Steve Micaj, was born in 1886. Hope to find info about his ancestors.

Zlatica : Re: Surname: Micaj
Laura,

To locate a town in Slovak Republic use :
http://mapy.atlas.sk

The SK's phone site :
www.zoznamst.sk
No listing for MICAJ in the area code 34 which would include Popudinske Mocidlany.
The LDS-Mormons have filmed the church records but this region's films are not ready for viewing in FHCL.
You might have to send a request to the archive or hire a researcher in SK to go to the archive for you.
What you think about Olic / Vlics being a town named Holic. This town is 5.5 km North-West of Popudinske Mocidlany.
The only MICAJ listing shows up in Presov and Kalinov far away East from Popudinske Mocidlany.

Laura

Using One Step in locating Ellis Island manifest there were 28 people from Popudin / Popudiny. No Micaj. 15 people from Mocidlany. I did not take a look which Mocidlany as there are / were two towns with that name.
It is possible that the surname Micaj only exist in a female line and thus no phone listing in PM.

Your welcome.

Something just does not seat right with me.
I would recommend that you get his naturalization petition.
The surname Micaj and Dzurkovic / Durkovic just seem so Eastern region and Greek Catholic. I know, there are exception, of course. Were they Greek Catholic?
The pronounciation of the name MICAJ is different in Slovak and in English. That is the way he signed his surname on the SS-5Form?

I do not believe they were Greek Catholic, but rather Roman Catholic. And to answer your other question, he signed his SS app. as "Steve Micaj". I will work on getting his naturalization petition. Laura

Zlatica, Do you know if there is a way to get someone's address in Slovakia from their phone #? (Michal Micaj in Kalinov) As the only Micaj in the Slovakia phone list, I feel there is a fair chance he could be a decendent of Steve. What do you think? Laura

Zlatica : Re: Surname: Micaj
Of course there is.
www.zoznamst.sk does have an English version, way on top.

The thing that I don't get is if he was born in Popudiny/ Popudinske Mocidlany (two villages are together) why did he put down that he left a family member in Olic. The H in Holic is not silent. Or better yet, why would only two listings exist in SK and not in the ancestral village.

name
Kalinov 5
068 01 Medzilaborce
Slovak Republic

The village of Kalinov has a Greek Catholic church.

Zlatica : Re: Surname: Micaj

If Istvan Michajlo passing thru EI in 1907 and going to his sister Zuza living in Binghampton your ancestor, being born in Eastern region than how did he get to the town of Popudin which is West and almost on the boarder with Czech Republic. Was there a name change? I must be missing something because this just does not add up.

Zlatica, I'm not convinced anymore that Istvan Michajlo is the same person as Steve Micaj. Steve did not have a sister named Zuza. His sibs were Paul, Rudolph, Thomas, Anna, John, and Frances. Laura

Zlatica : Re: Surname: Mica( j)
Laura

I just posted some info to Genforum query.
I am thinking that the surname is MICA and not MICAJ.
Our first ancestors married within same region, nationality and religion, of course with some exceptions.

Mario: Re: Surname: Mica( j)
I found this:
Congressman John Mica

"Mica`s grandfather was born in the western Slovak village of Kopcany, on the Morava River between Skalica and Kuty. He lived a few kilometers south of there in Velke Lavare before leaving for the US, where he arrived on December 28, 1907. The family settled in Binghamton, N.Y., and then relocated in 1956 to Florida."

Kopcany willage is about 3km from Holic, it means app. 8 km from Popudiny, by the way I have also part of my family living there (and a lot of friends)...
